LEAD inclusive counselling specialise in the area of learning disabilities. We provide professional yet empathetic support to those with learning disabilities, as well as anyone else who supports a person with a learning disability such as parents, carers or siblings. We offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment and work primarily from a person-centred approach.
It is often incorrectly assumed that because somebody has a learning disability, they do not feel the same as everyone else. This is not the case, people with learning disabilities struggle with the same issues that everyone else does. However because this group of people face additional challenges, such as difficulty understanding, difficulty communicating and social interaction difficulties, they can often struggle to access mainstream services such as counselling. At LEAD we have the ability to adapt our communication to a level appropriate to the client and we understand not only, what can cause communication to break down but also what can be done to help to overcome this.
Our approach is client-led which means we work at a level and pace appropriate to each client’s skills and ability, with no hidden agenda or assumed outcomes. We will use a total communication approach, using Makaton signing, pictures, photos and creative tools to help them express and explore their thoughts and feelings effectively.
